Abstract

This study aims to analyze the application of Problem-Based Learning (PBL) in improving students' critical thinking and problem-solving skills in social studies subjects as well as optimization strategies for its application through Systematic Literature Review.  The Systematic Literature Review (SLR) approach is used to identify, analyze, and synthesize findings from various related studies. This study is a systematic literature review that analyzes related research from 2018 to 2024. This study used 23 articles that showed PBL is effective in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills in social studies learning. Although the application of PBL is effective, its implementation is challenging. Optimization strategies for the implementation of PBL in improving students' ability to think critically and solve problems can be done with teacher training and professional development, the use of real-life problems to increase relevance, a supportive learning environment, adaptation to the developmental stage of elementary students and student involvement in learning. This article is expected to provide new insights into effective teaching strategies and challenges in the implementation of PBL in elementary schools, as well as a reference for the development of educational practices that are relevant to the needs of the times.
