Artificial Intelligence (AI) Usage Policy
Pasundan Journal of Mathematics Education (PJME) : Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika
1. Purpose and Scope
This policy governs the use of artificial intelligence (AI)—including generative AI such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, and other Large Language Model-based tools—during the writing, submission, editing, review, and publication of articles in the Pasundan Journal of Mathematics Education (PJME) : Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika.
This policy applies to authors, editors, reviewers, and all parties involved in the editorial process. Its objective is to uphold transparency, accountability, confidentiality, originality, and academic integrity.
2. General Principles
AI may be used as a supporting tool but cannot replace human responsibility, scholarly judgment, creativity, and decision-making.
Every AI user bears full responsibility for:
- The accuracy and correctness of information;
- The authenticity and originality of the manuscript;
- The validity of data and research results;
- The accuracy of citations and references;
- The protection of personal data and confidential information;
- Compliance with research and publication ethics.
AI-generated output must be critically reviewed, verified, and edited by humans before use.
3. Policy for Authors
3.1 Permitted Use of AI
Authors may use AI in a limited capacity to:
- Improve grammar, spelling, and readability;
- Assist with translation;
- Draft the outline or organization of the text;
- Assist in searching for terms or keywords;
- Assist in writing or checking computer code;
- Assist with data analysis, provided such use is explained as part of the research methodology.
Such use must not replace the author's intellectual contribution and responsibility.
3.2 Prohibited Use of AI
Authors are prohibited from using AI to:
- Fabricate or falsify research data;
- Manipulate research results;
- Create unverifiable citations or references;
- Generate conclusions unsupported by data;
- Misleadingly alter images, photographs, graphs, or research evidence;
- Replace research respondents or participants;
- Draft the entire article without the author's supervision and intellectual contribution;
- Disguise plagiarism or recycle the work of others;
- Upload personal data, sensitive data, or confidential information to public AI platforms without permission.
3.3 AI Cannot Be an Author
AI cannot be listed as an author or co-author because it cannot:
- Take responsibility for the article's content;
- Approve the final version of the article;
- Declare conflicts of interest;
- Hold or transfer copyright;
- Respond to allegations of publication ethics violations.
Full responsibility for the article's content remains with the human author(s).
3.4 Obligation to Disclose AI Use
Authors who use generative AI must disclose:
- The name of the AI tool or service;
- The tool version, if available;
- The purpose of its use;
- The sections of the article assisted by AI;
- Review and editing process by the author.
A statement regarding AI usage is placed in a dedicated section before the References.
Example:
AI Usage Statement
“In the preparation of this manuscript, the author used [name and version of AI tool] to assist with [purpose of use] in the [affected section] section. All AI-generated output has been reviewed, verified, and edited by the author. The author bears full responsibility for the accuracy, originality, and integrity of the article's entire content.”
If AI is used as part of the research design, data collection, data processing, programming, or analysis, such usage must also be described in detail in the Methods section.
Standard spelling and grammar checks that do not generate new content do not require a declaration.
3.5 Reference Verification
Authors are required to directly access, read, and verify every source identified with the assistance of AI. References that are unavailable, untraceable, or automatically generated by AI must not be included.
4. Policy for Reviewers
Reviewers must maintain the confidentiality of the manuscript and the entire peer review process.
Reviewers are prohibited from:
- Uploading the manuscript—in whole or in part—to public AI platforms;
- Inputting the author's tables, figures, data, or information into AI systems;
- Using AI to generate the entire review report;
- Delegating assessments of quality, validity, or scientific decisions to AI;
- Disclosing identities, manuscript content, or editorial communications via AI systems.
AI may only be used to a limited extent to improve the grammar or readability of comments drafted by the reviewer, provided that no part of the manuscript or confidential information is entered into the AI system.
If AI assistance is substantial, the reviewer must disclose this to the editor. The reviewer remains fully responsible for the accuracy, quality, and integrity of the review report.
5. Policy for Editors
Editors and editorial staff must maintain the confidentiality of the manuscript, author identities, reviewer identities, review reports, research data, and editorial communications. Editors are prohibited from:
- Uploading unpublished manuscripts to public AI platforms;
- Inputting reviewer reports or reviewer identities into AI systems;
- Using AI as the sole basis for accepting or rejecting an article;
- Delegating editorial decisions to automated systems;
- Using AI to replace the academic judgment of editors and reviewers.
AI may be used to assist with administrative tasks, similarity checks, language checks, anomaly detection, or manuscript management, provided the systems used offer adequate data protection and confidentiality.
All AI outputs must be verified by an editor. Final editorial decisions must be made by a human.
6. Use of AI Detection Systems
Results from AI content detection systems cannot be used as the sole evidence of misconduct. Such systems can produce errors and should only serve as preliminary indicators.
Editors must conduct further checks, request clarification from authors, and assess the evidence proportionately before making a decision.
7. Policy Violations
Undisclosed use of AI, data fabrication, generation of fake references, breaches of confidentiality, or the delegation of scholarly responsibility to AI may be considered violations of publication ethics.
Depending on the severity of the violation, Pasundan Journal of Mathematics Education (PJME) : Jurnal Pendidikan Matematika. may take actions such as:
- Requesting an explanation or clarification;
- Requiring revisions and disclosure of AI usage;
- Rejecting the manuscript;
- Canceling the review process;
- Revoking reviewer reports;
- Publishing a correction;
- Retracting a published article;
- Suspending the author or reviewer;
- Contacting relevant institutions if necessary.

The use of AI does not diminish or absolve human responsibility regarding scientific accuracy, copyright, confidentiality, academic integrity, and publication ethics.
