Abstract

Narrative essay writing skills have an important role in Indonesian language and literature subjects. All educators hope that students can master writing skills. One of them is that students can write narrative essays. Based on the results of observations, it is known that students still have difficulty putting ideas into written form and using Indonesian. Especially in terms of students' accuracy in paying attention to the writing aspects of spelling, capital letters, punctuation, and word choice. The low essay writing skills at school is caused by a lack of student interest, and a lack of learning methods that teachers use when teaching. To overcome the low skills of writing narrative essays, this study aimed to determine the level of skills in writing narrative essays in grade 5 students. The data collection technique used was to use evaluation documents on the results of student entries. The data collected through the evaluation document was then analyzed using data analysis techniques in the content analysis research method. The purpose of this research is to identify the causes of errors in writing narrative essays, to describe errors in the use of punctuation and capital letters. The results of this study are also expected to be a reference source for teachers in conducting evaluations regarding students' essay writing abilities. In addition, this research can provide insight for future researchers in finding more effective ways to understand and develop essay writing skills.
