Abstract

Education can be accessed by anyone, anywhere, and at any time. The learning process is one of the key components of academic success. Among the four language skills that students need to have is reading. Therefore, the importance of beginning reading is to enable students to read simple words and sentences accurately and fluently. Many students face challenges in the learning process, and one example of a commonly encountered learning difficulty is dyslexia. This difficulty involves obstacles in reading, and requires a special learning approach to help dyslexic students overcome these obstacles. This research was to determine initial reading difficulties in dyslexic students in the lower grades of elementary school. This study uses a qualitative method. The research subjects were grade 1 students and grade 1 teachers. The data collection techniques used were interviews, observation and literature study. The results of the research reveal that dyslexic students in the lower grades of elementary school, especially those at UPT SDN 372 Gresik, face considerable challenges in developing initial reading skills. There are two grade 1 students at UPT SDN 372 Gresik who face significant difficulties in reading. beginning. This difficulty is reflected in the various mistakes they make when reading, for example when they pronounce the word "pulang" as "puang". Reading difficulties in dyslexic students are not only an academic challenge, but have a significant impact on their psychosocial aspects.
