Abstract

Learning in schools currently still focuses on the role of the teacher as a lecturer. The impact is that students tend to be passive in learning, which ultimately affects their learning outcomes. This research was conducted to introduce the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model in social studies teaching at the elementary school level. This research uses a classroom action research method which involves four stages: planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. A total of 26 students were the subjects of this research, with data collection using observation, interviews and tests, as well as questionnaires as instruments. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical methods and quantitative descriptive analysis. The research results showed that in cycle I, social studies learning outcomes reached 63.07% (high category), while in cycle II it increased to 80.76% (very high category). This shows an increase of 17.69% in social studies learning outcomes. Thus, the application of the PBL method is effective in improving the social studies learning outcomes of class VI students. In addition, PBL gives students the opportunity to voice their thoughts and ideas, and increases active participation in the learning process
