Abstract

Character education is very important to apply to every individual, including people with disabilities, especially independent character so that they have attitudes or behavior that are able to stand alone and have confidence in overcoming every problem without the help of others. Blind people are included as people with disabilities. Blind people are individuals who experience problems with their sense of sight or their sense of sight does not function. This research aims to determine teachers' strategies in developing the independent character of blind students at SLBN 1 West Lombok. The method used in this research is qualitative with a case study type of research. Collection techniques are used by means of observation, interviews and documentation. Based on the results of this research, it shows that the teacher's strategy at SLBN 1 West Lombok in developing the independent character of blind students is through direct familiarization and with special Orientation, Mobility, Social and Communication programs (OMSC). Factors driving teachers' strategies in developing the independent character of blind students include support from parents and teachers, adequate facilities and infrastructure. Meanwhile, the inhibiting factors that are accepted are excessive parental worry, individuals who have multiple disabilities or MDVI, and a lack of public awareness in the school environment.
