Abstract

This study aims to determine whether the Problem-Based Learning model influences the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Mataram in the topic of statistics, as compared to the Direct Instruction model. The research employs a quantitative approach using a Quasi Experimental method, specifically the Non-equivalent Control Group Design Pretest Posttest design.The study's population comprises all eighth-grade students at SMP Negeri 4 Mataram, with a sample selected through Cluster Random Sampling. The chosen samples include class VIII.1 as the experimental group and class VIII.4 as the control group. The experimental group is subjected to the Problem-Based Learning model, while the control group undergoes the Direct Instruction model. The results of this study are as follows: (1) The initial data (pretest) from both classes exhibited homogenous data variances and no significant difference in average values; (2) After the experimental group was treated with the problem-based learning model, the final data (posttest) displayed homogenous data variances and a significant difference in average values; (3) The hypothesis test using a t-test at a 5% significance level yielded a calculated. This means that the null hypothesis  is rejected and the alternative hypothesis  is accepted. In other words, there is an influence of the problem-based learning model on the critical thinking skills of eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 4 Mataram in the topic of statistics for the academic year 2022-2023.
