Abstract

The musical abilities of students in vocational schools not specializing in music often pose a challenge, especially due to the lack of basic music theory knowledge among the students. Music, as an important part of arts education, plays a role in developing creativity, emotional intelligence, and practical skills. This research aims to explore the application of the Solfegio method as a learning approach based on the philosophy of progressivism to enhance students' musicality. The principle of progressivism, as formulated by John Dewey, emphasizes learning through direct experience (learning by doing) by involving active student participation. This study employs a systematic literature review method, utilizing relevant articles that discuss progressivism, musicality, and the Solfegio method. Data is analyzed to evaluate the effectiveness of the Solfegio method, which includes ear training, sight reading, and sight singing, in enhancing the ability to recognize, read, and express basic musical elements. The research results show that the Solfegio method not only supports the development of technical music skills but also fosters a deep appreciation for the art of music. This method is relevant to the principles of progressivism, which emphasizes active and contextual learning. This research concludes that the progressive-based Solfegio method has the potential to holistically enhance students' musicality and contribute to better quality music art education.
