Abstract

The lack of responsible behavior among the first-grade students can be a cause of the learning process doesn’t work well in the classroom. Issues such as low motivation to finish homework, lack of independence in bringing their own school supplies, and honesty in completing assignments are some of the disciplinary problems observed among the first-grade students. This study aims to explore how the token economy technique can improve the responsible behavior of first-grade elementary students. The method used in this study is Classroom Action Research (PTK) with purposive sampling. The study involved 9 respondents aged 7 to 11 years, consisting of 7 boys and 2 girls. The procedure of classroom action research includes the stages of planning, implementation, observation, and reflection. Meanwhile, the application of the token economy technique consists of preparation, implementation, and evaluation phases. Data collection was conducted through observation and documentation. The research instrument was a questionnaire based on a Likert Scale, guided by modified characteristics and indicators of responsible behavior. Data analysis was conducted using both descriptive quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques, with a success target of 75% of the students, or 7 out of 9 first-grade students. The results of this study indicate that the token economy technique effectively improved the responsible behavior of the first-grade elementary students. The increase observed from the pre-cycle to the second cycle was 16.88%. The success rate achieved was 56.19%, with 5 out of 9 the first-grade students represent characteristics of responsible behavior.
