Abstract

Reading skills at the beginning stage play a crucial role in further learning. As the foundation underlying subsequent reading abilities, reading skills in 1st grade is the cornerstone that must be strong and sturdy. However, in SDN Nglanduk 02, there are still several 1st grade students who cannot read at the beginning level. It is known that 7 out of 11 students experience difficulties in reading, with 4 of them not being able to recognize letters well. Therefore, the researcher was motivated to conduct a classroom action research on the Implementation of Problem Based Learning Model to Improve Reading Skills through Visual Learning Cards Media. This type of research is Classroom Action Research (CAR). Data collection techniques used in this study were observation, interviews, and documentation. As for data analysis techniques, the researcher used quantitative and qualitative analysis techniques. This study concludes that the implementation of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model with the assistance of visual learning cards media proved to be more effective in improving beginning reading skills in 1st grade students at SDN Nglanduk 02. The improvement amounted to 36.35%, where previously only 36.37% became 72.72%. And from the initial 7 students categorized as unable to read, after the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model was applied, there were 3 students who still scored below the standard. Although not one hundred percent perfect, this learning model has a positive impact, both for students and teachers.
