Abstract

This study aims to explain the problems in students' speaking and communication skills in elementary schools. More specifically, the purpose of this research is to describe students' abilities in speaking and communication skills, find out the factors that affect the low level of speaking and communication skills, and solutions to improve these skills. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative with the type of case study. The subjects in this study were 30 students of class IV-A and 1 homeroom teacher of SDN Tarogong 1 Kec. Tarogong Kidul Kab. Garut. The instruments used are observation, interviews, and student speaking skills tests. The analysis techniques used were qualitative and quantitative. The results showed that the problematic speaking skills were influenced by several factors including internal factors and external factors. Internal factors include psychological, physical, and linguistic while external factors include the environment, teacher competence, and learning approaches. As for the results of the communication skills questionnaire, there are four indicators in the low category and two indicators in the medium category, while the test results on speaking skills 13.33% of students in the good category, 26.17% of students in the sufficient category, and most or 60% of students in the low category. There are efforts to improve students' speaking and communication skills, namely using various effective methods such as dialoguing, debating, telling stories, discussions, speeches, and making announcements.
