Abstract

Reading is a basic ability as a provision for learning so that you can learn anything. The purpose of reading is to understand the content or message of what is read. A narrative is a form of writing that tries to create, tell, and arrange human actions in a story chronologically or that takes place in one unit of time. The purpose of this study was to determine the factors that influence the reading comprehension ability in fifth-grade students' narrative texts and to describe the efforts that can be made to improve the reading comprehension skills in fifth-grade students' narrative texts. This study used descriptive qualitative with 11 graders as subjects. V. Data collection techniques used in this study were written tests and interview guides. The results of the study showed that fifth-grade students had different reading comprehension skills from one student to another. Based on the aspects contained in the ability to read, the lowest comprehension is seen in the aspect of literal understanding, the sufficient aspect is seen in the aspect of understanding interpretation, and the highest aspect is the aspect of critical understanding and creative understanding. Factors for students' difficulty in reading comprehension skills are vocabulary that is difficult for students to understand, the mood or mood of students is not good, students finding it difficult to concentrate on reading, and students' lack of interest in reading. Solutions to overcome students' difficulties in reading comprehension are motivating students to read, determining the purpose of reading activities, teacher's sensitivity to students who do not understand reading, and using media and methods in learning and learning activities.
