Abstract

The concept of khalifah fil ardh is a fundamental principle in Islamic teachings that emphasizes the role of humans as leaders and guardians of the earth. In the context of the global environmental crisis, this concept is highly relevant as a foundation for developing environmental ethics within Islamic Religious Education (IRE) learning. This study aims to analyze the concept of khalifah fil ardh as a basis for environmental ethics and its implications for IRE learning. This research employed a qualitative approach using a literature review method. Data sources were obtained from the Qur’an, Hadith, Qur’anic exegesis, Islamic education literature, and relevant scholarly journals related to environmental ethics and Islamic education. Data analysis techniques included data reduction, conceptual categorization, and thematic interpretation. The findings indicate that the concept of khalifah fil ardh contains values of responsibility, trust (amanah), justice, and sustainability, which can serve as a foundation for shaping students’ environmental ethics. The implementation of this concept in IRE learning can be achieved through integrating environmental values into learning materials, applying contextual learning approaches, and fostering environmentally responsible attitudes. This study is expected to contribute conceptually to the development of Islamic Religious Education learning that promotes ecological awareness and students’ religious character.
