Abstract

The background in this study is that in this era, critical thinking is very important for everyday life, but the reality in the field is very different. The lack of students' critical thinking skills is also due to the lack of application and habituation applied in learning. Conventional or teacher-centered teaching methods can turn students into passive recipients of information, which lowers their capacity for critical thinking. Currently, the teaching and learning process in the classroom is experiencing difficulties, including the lack of active students and this can affect students' critical thinking skills. The purpose of this study was to determine the difference and influence between the conventional class (control class) and the class that was given the treatment of using the Problem Based Learning model (experimental class) on the critical thinking skills of fourth grade elementary school students. This study used a quantitative approach with a Quasi-Experiment type research method and the research design used was Nonequivalent Control Group Design. The data collection technique used was using pretest-posttest and observation sheet. Based on the results of the study, there is a difference between the control class and the experimental class, this can be seen from the results of the Mann Whitney test with a significance value (2-tailed) is 0.000 <0.05 then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted. This means that there is a difference in the critical thinking skills of students who use the PBL model and students who use conventional learning models. In addition, there is also a large influence between the control and experimental classes, this can be seen from the calculated results of the effect size test which means that the class using the PBL model has an effect value of 0.19 which means that the influence of the PBL model on students' critical thinking skills is large. While the class using the conventional learning model has an effect value of -0.02 which means that the effect of conventional learning models on students' critical thinking skills is small. So it can be concluded that there is a difference and influence between the control class and the experimental class using the Problem Based Learning Model.
