Abstract

ABSTRACT

This study aims to analyze the marpokat tradition as an oral practice within the social context of the Mandailing community and to examine revitalization efforts aimed at restoring intergenerational transmission. The study employed a descriptive qualitative method and was conducted in Aek Badak Jae Village, Sayur Matinggi District, South Tapanuli Regency. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and then analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña through data condensation, data display, and conclusion drawing and verification. The oral tradition was analyzed using Ruth Finnegan’s perspective through the aspects of performance, transmission, audience and context, and function, while revitalization was analyzed based on Joshua A. Fishman’s concept of intergenerational transmission. The findings show that marpokat remains a living traditional deliberative practice closely associated with the Dalihan Na Tolu kinship system and characterized by communication patterns based on the respective roles of suhut, kahanggi, anak boru, and mora. Based on these conditions, revitalization is directed through four forms: practice-based training for younger generations, the cultivation of marpokat through family and customary activities, cultural events as a means of introduction and simulation, and the use of social media as a medium for education and documentation. These revitalization efforts emphasize the importance of direct involvement of younger generations and the sustainability of transmission spaces within families and communities so that marpokat can remain alive and be passed on to future generations.
