This study aims to identify and understand the trigger factors for Upward Social Comparison and the emotional responses that arise among working students within the academic environment among Guidance and Counseling Class 01 students at Slamet Riyadi University, Class of 2022. This study used a qualitative approach with a case study method. The research subjects consisted of two Guidance and Counseling Class 01 students at Slamet RiyadiUniversity, Class of 2022, who hold dual roles as students and workers (one male subject and one female subject). Data collection techniques included in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. Data validity was tested using source triangulation, while data analysis techniques followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The results showed that Upward Social Comparison occurs when working students observe the achievements, progress, or conditions of others perceived as superior. Overall, 11 triggering factors were identified, divided into main/general triggers (family, social media, peers, campus culture, involvement in campus activities, and job demands) and individual specific triggers (academic achievement, similar conditions with others, financial status, living environment, and future aspirations). Upward Social Comparison triggers negative emotional impacts such as feelings of lag, inferiority, anxiety, and academic pressure, but under certain conditions, it serves as a drive for self-evaluation and self-improvement.
