KEKERASAN VERBAL DALAM FILM DEAR DAVID: MENGGUNAKAN TEORI IMPOLITENESS CULPEPER

Abstract

This research is motivated by the use of impolite language in social interactions, which can cause discomfort, lower self-esteem, and constitute a form of verbal violence. This phenomenon is represented through the dialogue between characters in the film “Dear David”. The study aims to describe the impoliteness strategies based on Jonathan Culpeper’s framework present in the film “Dear David” and to analyze the forms of verbal violence committed by the characters. The primary theory employed is Jonathan Culpeper’s impoliteness theory, which classifies impoliteness into several strategies. To identify forms of verbal violence, the study utilizes the classification system proposed by Dube et al. A descriptive-qualitative method was used in this research. The data consist of utterances or dialogues between characters in the film “Dear David” that contain impoliteness strategies and verbal violence. Data were collected using "listen-and-note" and documentation techniques, taking into account conversational contexts, relationships between characters, and the situational context of the utterances. The results indicate the presence of  31 utterances containing impoliteness strategies and verbal violence. The impoliteness strategies identified include: Bald on Record Impoliteness (8 instances), Positive Impoliteness (10 instances), Negative Impoliteness (6 instances), Mock Politeness (6 instances), and Withholding Politeness (1 instance). Positive Impoliteness was the most dominant strategy. Additionally, various forms of verbal violence were identified, including shouting, insulting, intimidating, threatening, humiliating, demeaning, belittling, swearing, blaming, mocking, teasing (negatively), scapegoating, criticizing, and negative comparison.
