Abstract

Integrated Science and Social Studies (IPAS) learning at the elementary school level needs to provide experiences that enable students to connect knowledge with their experiences and everyday life. In this context, meaningful learning through the Deep Learning approach emphasizes the connection between new knowledge and students’ existing knowledge and experiences. This study aimed to describe the implementation of meaningful learning through the Deep Learning approach in Phase C fifth-grade IPAS learning, particularly Chapter 4, “Sound and Its Applications in Everyday Life.” This study employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative design. The research was conducted during the second semester of the 2025/2026 academic year at SDN Joho 03 Mojolaban, involving one fifth-grade teacher and 15 students. Data were collected through observations, semi-structured interviews, documentation, analysis of students’ evaluation results, and field notes. Data validity was established through source and technique triangulation, while data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles, Huberman, and Saldaña. The findings showed that learning through Problem Based Learning provided opportunities for students to observe problems, engage in discussions, express ideas, and connect the concept of sound with their experiences and everyday life. Five students (33.3%) were able to connect and apply the concept more consistently, while 10 students (66.7%) still required guidance in contextualizing and transferring knowledge. The findings indicate a gap between conceptual understanding and students’ ability to construct meaning and apply knowledge in real-life contexts.
