Abstract

Indonesian students' computational thinking (CT) skills remain suboptimal, even though CT is an essential competency for object-oriented programming (OOP), a topic that is inherently abstract and difficult for novice learners to visualize. This study applied a Discovery learning model based on interactive multimedia to improve the CT skills of vocational high school students in OOP learning. A research and development (R&D) approach was used, following the ADDIE model (Analyze, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation) and involving 41 eleventh-grade students from the Software and Game Development program (PPLG) at a vocational high school in Bandung Regency, West Java. The interactive multimedia integrated all discovery learning stages and was validated by media experts using the Learning Object Review Instrument (LORI), followed by field testing using a pretest-posttest design and paired sample t-test analysis. Expert validation yielded an average score of 97.5%, indicating that the multimedia met the required quality standards. The paired sample t-test showed a statistically significant improvement in students' CT. N-Gain analysis revealed the highest gains in the decomposition (62%) and pattern recognition (59%) indicators, followed by algorithm design (45%), while the lowest gain occurred in abstraction (28%). These findings indicate that Discovery learning based on interactive multimedia effectively improves students' CT in OOP learning, particularly in decomposition and pattern recognition, although additional instructional support is still needed to strengthen students' abstraction skills
