Abstract

Collaboration skills are recognized as a key 21st-century global competency that needs to be fostered in elementary school students through innovative instruction that prioritizes learner needs and active participation. This study aims to examine the enhancement of students' collaboration skills through the implementation of a STEM-based (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model within the Natural and Social Sciences (IPAS) curriculum. The study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the model developed by Kemmis and McTaggart, conducted over two cycles comprising action planning, implementation, observation of learning activities, and reflection on the outcomes. Participants consisted of fifth-grade elementary school students. Data were collected through classroom observations, questionnaires, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative approaches. The results indicate that the implementation of the STEM-based PjBL model effectively improved students' collaboration skills. Observation scores rose from 57.04% in Cycle I to 80.90% in Cycle II. Similarly, questionnaire results showed an increase from 80.22% to 93.56%. This improvement was reflected in positive changes regarding positive interdependence and student interaction, individual accountability for assigned tasks, social skills, and the ability to synergize toward shared goals for optimal project completion. Consequently, the implementation of STEM-based PjBL plays a vital role in strengthening students' capacity for effective collaboration within the context of science education at the elementary level
