LOVE AND LOSS LANGUAGE: A SEMANTIC ANALISYS OF THE 1975’S “ABOUT YOU”

This study examines the denotative and connotative meanings found in the song “About You” by The 1975 using a semantic approach. The purpose of this research is to explain how linguistic expressions in the song lyrics construct the intertwined themes of love and loss. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, with the song lyrics serving as the primary data source. The analysis is conducted through three stages: identifying linguistic units containing semantic meaning, classifying these units into denotative and connotative meanings, and interpreting how these meanings contribute to the thematic construction of love and loss. The findings reveal that denotative meaning dominates the song by presenting a clear narrative of memory, reflection, and emotional questioning. Literal expressions enable listeners to understand the storyline of a past romantic relationship without relying heavily on figurative language. Meanwhile, connotative meaning appears selectively in certain expressions to convey deeper emotional attachment, imagined commitment, and emotional vulnerability. These connotative elements play a significant role in strengthening the representation of lingering love and unresolved loss. Overall, the song “About You” portrays the experience of a person who is unable to move on from a past relationship, where love persists through memory and imagination while loss is expressed through emotional distance and longing. This study demonstrates that semantic analysis is an effective approach for understanding how song lyrics convey complex emotional experiences through both literal and associative meanings
