BENTUK-BENTUK PELANGGARAN PRINSIP KESANTUNAN BERBAHASA DALAM INTERAKSI SISWA DENGAN GURU DI SMP MUHAMMADIYAH 26 BABAT

Abstract

This study aims to describe the forms of politeness-principle violations that occur in student-teacher interaction at SMP Muhammadiyah 26 Babat. The study was motivated by the phenomenon of students speaking impolitely to teachers, both during classroom learning and in informal situations outside the classroom, which potentially disrupts the social harmony between teachers and students. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method with a pragmatic approach. The data sources were utterances produced by 2 teachers and 20 students (12 male and 8 female), collected through listening, recording, and note-taking techniques, and analyzed using Leech's (1983) politeness principle, which comprises six maxims. The results show that of all the utterances observed, 24 utterances contained violations of the politeness principle. These violations were distributed across four maxims: the approbation maxim (14 data), the agreement maxim (8 data), the sympathy maxim (1 datum), and the generosity maxim (1 datum). Violations were most dominant in the approbation and agreement maxims, reflected in student utterances that showed insufficient appreciation toward teachers, such as joking while the teacher was explaining, diverting the conversation to another topic, and directly expressing refusal or disagreement using impolite word choices. These findings indicate that students' linguistic politeness toward teachers has not been fully internalized, even though the school is based on Islamic values. The results of this study are expected to serve as evaluation material for teachers and schools in fostering students' linguistic politeness in the educational environment.
