This study examines the influence of social media usage on the reading ability of students from various universities. The increasing intensity of social media use among university students has raised concerns regarding its impact on students’ interest and comprehension in reading academic materials. The purpose of this research is to determine whether social media usage affects students’ reading ability and reading habits. This study employed a quantitative descriptive method using a survey distributed through Google Forms to students from different universities. The data were collected from respondents who actively use social media platforms such as Instagram, TikTok, X, and WhatsApp. The questionnaire focused on the duration of social media usage, reading frequency, reading comprehension, and students’ perceptions of the influence of social media on their reading activities. The results indicate that excessive social media use tends to reduce students’ reading intensity and concentration when reading academic texts. However, social media also provides positive impacts, such as easier access to educational information and digital reading materials. Therefore, the influence of social media on reading ability depends on how students manage and utilize social media in their daily lives.
