Abstract

This study aims to analyze the influence of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model on the Complex Problem Solving (CPS) competence of eighth-grade students in the Pancasila Education subject at SMP Negeri 8 Medan. Complex problem-solving competence is an essential 21st-century skill that students must possess. However, Pancasila Education learning in schools is still dominated by a conventional teacher-centered approach, so CPS competencies have not developed optimally. The research uses a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method thru a Non-Equivalent Control Group Design in the form of a Pretest-Posttest Control Group Design. The population includes all eighth-grade students of SMP Negeri 8 Medan. The sample was determined thru purposive sampling, resulting in class VIII.9 as the experimental group with PBL treatment and class VIII.10 as the control group with conventional learning. The research instrument consists of a case-based essay test developed based on CPS competency indicators, including the ability to identify problems, develop alternative solutions, evaluate and choose the appropriate solution, and implement the solution. Data were analyzed thru validity tests, reliability tests, descriptive analysis, normality tests, homogeneity tests, and hypothesis tests using the Independent Sample t-test with the help of SPSS version 31. The research results show that the application of the PBL model has a significant impact on the improvement of students' CPS competence, with an average posttest score of 80.90 for the experimental group, higher than the control group at 65.42, with a significance level of less than 0.001. N-Gain analysis indicates a moderate increase in the experimental group (0.65) compared to a low increase in the control group (0.39). Based on these findings, it is concluded that the PBL model effectively enhances students' Complex Problem Solving competence in Pancasila Education learning and can be considered as an alternative teaching strategy in schools.
