Abstract

This study was motivated by the importance of implementing teaching methods that can enhance students’ engagement, creativity, and understanding in the subject of Islamic Religious Education (PAI). One method considered capable of meeting these needs is Mind Mapping, which helps students organize information visually so that it is easier to understand and remember. This study aims to describe teachers’ experiences in implementing the Mind Mapping method, students’ experiences during Islamic Religious Education lessons using this method, and the challenges encountered in the learning process at SMP Negeri 24 Sarolangun. The study employed a qualitative approach using a phenomenological research design. The research informants consisted of the school principal, Islamic Religious Education teachers, and eighth-grade students. Data were collected through observation, in-depth interviews, and documentation, then analyzed using data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was tested through triangulation of sources and techniques. The results of the study indicate that the application of the Mind Mapping method provided a positive experience for teachers because it was able to increase student engagement, creativity, and understanding during the learning process. Students also found the learning process to be more interesting, enjoyable, and easier to understand, and they felt it helped them remember the material. The challenges faced included difficulty in identifying keywords, connecting concepts, and a lack of confidence when presenting the results of mind mapping. These challenges were overcome through guidance, mentoring, and motivation provided by the teacher during the learning process
