Abstract

Final-year university students face various academic demands that require them to make appropriate decisions. Self-regulation is considered an important factor associated with individuals’ tendencies to adopt particular decision-making styles. This study aimed to examine the relationship between self-regulation and the five decision-making styles among final-year university students. A quantitative approach with a correlational research design was employed. A total of 160 final-year university students were recruited using a purposive sampling technique. Data were collected using the Short Self-Regulation Questionnaire (SSRQ) to measure self-regulation and the General Decision Making Styles (GDMS) questionnaire to assess the five decision-making styles. Data were analyzed using Spearman's rank-order correlation. The results indicated that self-regulation was positively and significantly correlated with the rational (r = .556, p < .001) and intuitive (r = .398, p < .001) decision-making styles. In contrast, self-regulation was negatively and significantly correlated with the dependent (r = −.356, p < .001), avoidant (r = −.582, p < .001), and spontaneous (r = −.465, p < .001) decision-making styles. These findings suggest that higher levels of self-regulation are associated with greater tendencies to adopt rational and intuitive decision-making styles, and lower tendencies to adopt dependent, avoidant, and spontaneous decision-making styles. Therefore, self-regulation appears to be an important factor associated with decision-making style tendencies among final-year university students.
