Abstract

This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of dyslexic fifth-grade students at SDN 1 Batangsaren, Tulungagung Regency. This study employed a qualitative approach using a case study design. The research subjects consisted of two fifth-grade students identified as having indications of dyslexia, namely AN and AT. Data were collected through observation, interviews, tests, and documentation. Data analysis followed the Miles and Huberman model, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings revealed that AN and AT demonstrated dyslexic characteristics in visual, auditory (phonological), reading behavior, and learning process aspects. The observation results showed that AN obtained a score of 36 with a percentage of 75%, while AT obtained a score of 37 with a percentage of 77.08%, placing both students in the high category. Meanwhile, the test results indicated that both students achieved a score of 19 out of a maximum score of 52, with a percentage of 36.54%, which was categorized as low. The difficulties experienced by the students included distinguishing similar letters, reversing letters, blending sounds into words, reading hesitantly, comprehending reading texts, and recalling verbally delivered information. Interview results with the classroom teacher revealed that both students required repeated instructions and special assistance during reading activities due to difficulties in recognizing words and understanding texts. In conclusion, AN and AT exhibited characteristics of specific learning disabilities in the form of dyslexia, which affected their reading skills, phonological processing, language comprehension, and learning process. Therefore, appropriate instructional strategies, individualized assistance, and collaboration between teachers and parents to improve students' literacy skills.
