Abstract

This study examines the experiences of Grade 5 students at SDN 09 Keramat Pela in using English, employing a qualitative phenomenological approach (Moustakas, 1994). The main participants were five students and one English teacher. Data was gathered through semi-structured interviews, observations, and documents, then analyzed via the Modified Van Kaam Method. Six themes emerged: linguistic challenges, psychological barriers, social influences, teaching methods and media effectiveness, external factors, and motivation to learn. Key linguistic issues included inconsistent pronunciation and a limited active vocabulary, with hidden foreign language anxiety (FLA) identified as the most persistent obstacle. Social support and family encouragement played significant roles in boosting students' speaking confidence. Teaching tools like Wordwall were effective in encouraging oral production, although personal motivation was not directly tied to daily speaking activities. These results highlight the need for comprehensive, emotionally responsive speaking instruction tailored for Indonesian elementary EFL learners
