Abstract

The development of the online scam industry in Southeast Asia has given rise to a new form of modern slavery that utilizes human trafficking as a means of recruiting forced labor in digital fraud operations. This phenomenon is highlighted in the documentary "Hell on the Border: Traces of Online Gambling Mafia and Digital Slavery." This study aims to analyze the construction of power discourses represented in the film. The study uses a qualitative method with Norman Fairclough's Critical Discourse Analysis approach, which includes the dimensions of text, discourse practice, and sociocultural practice, and is supported by Michel Foucault's concept of power. The results show that power discourses are represented through power relations over the mind and power relations over the body. Power relations over the mind are displayed through information manipulation and fake job vacancies to recruit victims, while power relations over the body are manifested through surveillance, threats, violence, and forced labor. In discourse practice, the film was produced through a cross-national investigative journalism collaboration that aims to uncover the mechanisms of crime that have been hidden to raise public awareness of the issue of modern slavery. Meanwhile, in the dimension of sociocultural practices, the discourse of power is influenced by complex social conditions, such as economic inequality, the development of digital technology, political conflict in Myanmar, and the development of transnational organized crime in the Golden Triangle region.
