Abstract

The readiness of lifesaving appliances is a critical factor in ensuring maritime safety. Lifeboats serve as the primary evacuation equipment during emergency situations, requiring proper maintenance and operational readiness. This study aims to analyze the factors causing suboptimal lifeboat maintenance and identify improvement strategies aboard KM. Sinabung. A qualitative approach was employed through observation, interviews, and documentation conducted during sea practice activities. The findings indicate that several factors contribute to maintenance constraints, including limited crew awareness, inadequate inspection discipline, insufficient training, spare-part availability issues, workload pressure, and ineffective supervision. The study also revealed a malfunction in the lifeboat engine during an abandon ship drill at Murhum Baubau Port, which prevented the heave-up process from being completed. This condition demonstrates that safety equipment inspections should not only focus on visual checks but also include functional testing and operational readiness assessments. The study recommends strengthening planned maintenance systems, improving crew competence through regular drills, enhancing supervision, and ensuring spare-part availability. These measures are expected to improve lifeboat readiness and contribute to maritime safety performance.
