Abstract

This study focuses on the implementation of Wolio language literacy through a pictorial vocabulary dictionary on the Wolio literacy skills of fourth-grade students at SD Negeri 1 Labalawa. This study is experimental with a one-group pretest–posttest design. The sample consisted of 31 fourth-grade students selected by saturated sampling. Data collection techniques used observation and tests (pretest and posttest). Data analysis included descriptive statistics, a normality test, and a paired-samples t-test. The results show an improvement in Wolio literacy after the implementation of the pictorial vocabulary dictionary: in the pretest, the average literacy level was in the moderate category (48.4%, 15 students), while in the posttest the average increased to the very high category (51.6%, 16 students). This improvement was influenced by the dictionary’s design, which includes attractive illustrations, three-language transliterations (Wolio, Indonesian, English), and active student engagement during lessons. These findings indicate that the pictorial vocabulary dictionary is effective in enhancing Wolio literacy while also benefiting English learning. The study recommends developing similar illustrated instructional materials, increasing the availability of learning resources, and fostering habitual use of Wolio at school and at home to sustain the continued use of the regional language.
