PERAN GURU PENDIDIKAN AGAMA ISLAM DALAM MEMBENTUK KARAKTER PEDULI LINGKUNGAN DI SMP ASSA’ADAH SURABAYA

Abstract

This study examines the contribution of Islamic Religious Education (PAI) teachers to the development of environmentally conscious character among students at SMP ASSA'ADAH Surabaya. The background to this study is the urgent need to strengthen Islamically informed environmental awareness in schools. The qualitative case study collected data through a combination of document analysis, in-depth interviews, and observation. The findings confirm that the PAI teachers strategically act as mentors, motivators, role models, and educators to foster students' environmental awareness. This awareness is manifested in concrete actions such as reducing plastic consumption, maintaining green spaces, separating waste, using electricity and water efficiently, and practicing disciplined waste disposal. The foundation for the development of these positive behaviors is the internalization of transcendental Islamic values, particularly the principles of humanity as guardian of the Earth (Amanah), purity, and responsibility. This synergy between theological teaching and practical habit formation has proven effective in raising a young generation with a high sense of responsibility and sensitivity to ecological sustainability.
