CULTURE SHOCK MAHASISWA ASAL KABUPATEN KUANTAN SINGINGI RIAU DI YOGYAKARTA: STUDI KASUS ADAPTASI SOSIAL DI LINGKUNGAN BARU

Abstract

This study explores the culture shock phenomenon and the social adaptation
process of migrant students within the context of intercultural communication. The
high cultural diversity in Indonesia often causes migrant students to experience
culture shock when relocating for higher education, which is characterized by
language barriers, differences in social norms, and psychological impacts such as
anxiety and lack of confidence. The objective of this research is to deeply
understand these psychological dynamics and adaptation patterns to serve as a
practical guide for students and regional organizations in minimizing the negative
impacts of cultural transitions. This research employed a qualitative approach with
a descriptive design. Participants were selected using purposive sampling. Data
were collected through in-depth interviews, observations, and documentation, then
analyzed via data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. Source and
method triangulation were applied to ensure data validity. The results indicate that
migrant students experience culture shock primarily due to differences in language
and communication styles, leading to intercultural misunderstandings and emotional
stress. To overcome these challenges, students engage in gradual social adaptation
through proactive learning and adjusting their communication behavior.
Furthermore, the development of intercultural communication competence and the
presence of strong social support from family, peers, and the campus community
play a crucial role in helping students build self-confidence, manage psychological
stress, and accelerate their adaptation process toward a harmonious and inclusive
cultural integration.
