Abstract

This study aims to explore ethnomathematics in the Tabuik culture of Pariaman and its relation to mathematics learning in elementary schools. Tabuik is a cultural tradition of the Pariaman community, West Sumatra, which contains philosophical values and mathematical concepts in its architectural forms and cultural processions. This research used a qualitative approach with an ethnographic method. The research subjects consisted of traditional leaders, Tabuik craftsmen, community leaders, the Pariaman City Tourism and Culture Office, and elementary school teachers. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and
documentation. The results showed that the Tabuik culture contains various
ethnomathematical activities such as counting, measuring, determining direction and location, and designing structures. In addition, several mathematical concepts were identified, including triangles, trapezoids, rectangles, semicircles, cylinders,
blocks, and hemispheres. These concepts are closely related to geometry learning
in elementary schools. The findings indicate that the Tabuik culture can be used as a contextual and meaningful learning resource to help students understand mathematical concepts while preserving local culture. Therefore, ethnomathematics-based learning can support more meaningful mathematics learning in elementary schools.
