Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model on the mathematical problem-solving abilities of eighth-grade students at UPT SMP Negeri 11 Medan on the Pythagorean Theorem material. This research employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental method using a nonequivalent control group design. The sample consisted of 60 students, divided into 30 students in the experimental class and 30 students in the control class, selected through purposive sampling. The research instrument was an essay test based on Polya’s problem-solving stages, administered as pretest and posttest. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and an independent sample t-test at a significance level of 0.05. The results showed that the average pretest score of the experimental class increased from 38.43 to 84.47 in the posttest, while the control class increased from 22.47 to 56.00. The hypothesis test indicated a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, meaning there was a significant difference between the two groups. Furthermore, the N-Gain analysis showed that the experimental class achieved a high category (0.7512), while the control class was in the moderate category (0.4342). Therefore, it can be concluded that the Problem-Based Learning model has a significant effect on improving students’ mathematical problem-solving abilities.
