Abstract

This study investigated suboptimal learning outcomes in Islamic Religious Education (PAI) among vocational high school (SMK) students in East Bandung, evidenced by inadequate comprehension and limited application of religious values in daily life. The research aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Project-Based Learning (PjBL) in enhancing PAI academic achievement. A quantitative quasi-experimental design was employed, comparing the academic performance of students using PjBL with a control group receiving conventional instruction. Mann-Whitney U test analysis revealed no statistically significant difference between the two groups (Sig. 2-tailed = 0.191 > 0.05), although the PjBL group demonstrated a higher mean score.  While the PjBL model yielded higher average PAI scores than conventional teaching, this difference was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that neither approach demonstrably improved student outcomes and highlight the multifaceted factors influencing PAI learning, emphasizing the need for a more holistic and comprehensive pedagogical approach.
