Abstract

In contrast to the number of Muslims in Indonesia, Islamic education has challenges in its implementation. To address this issue, the general public needs to understand the Islamic educational paradigm that should be implemented in Indonesia. One of the many Islamic educational thinkers with a viewpoint that is thought-provoking is Azyumardi Azra. The focus of this research is to analyze and describe the concept of Islamic education from Azyumardi Azra's perspective and its relationship with higher education. The type of research used is literature study or research carried out by taking data from literature sources from previous research. The research results obtained are: Islamic education is a process of forming individuals based on Islamic teachings which are based on the Al-Quran, As-Sunnah, the words of friends, the benefit of the people or society, traditions or customs of society, and the results of the thoughts of experts. Islam or ijtihad. The goals of Islamic education consist of "intermediate goals" and "final goals". oriented towards fostering religious values ​​and mastery of science and technology. The relevance of Islamic educational thought and Azyumardi Azra's praxis can be seen and studied from his various works in developing higher education, namely: the change from IAIN to UIN, development of faculties and study programs, infrastructure development, changes and development of study and collaboration centers, as well as increasing welfare lecturers and staff.
