Abstract

This study aims to improve elementary school students' critical thinking skills in mathematics learning through the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model combined with the Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) approach. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was carried out in two cycles, each consisting of one meeting, following five stages of the PBL syntax focused on solving real-life problems. The results showed a significant improvement in students' critical thinking skills from the pre-cycle to Cycle II. Initially, most students were in the low category, but by Cycle II, many reached the very high category. This improvement occurred due to the implementation of the PBL-RME steps and the use of contextual media, which motivated students to think logically and deeply when solving problems. Therefore, the PBL-RME learning model proved effective in enhancing students' critical thinking skills, particularly in mathematics. In conclusion, the PBL-RME model has proven effective in improving students' critical thinking skills and can serve as an alternative approach to mathematics learning in elementary schools.
