Abstract

Improving students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes is a major focus in education, especially at the primary school level. In grade VI of SD Sidorejo Lor 01 Salatiga, it was found that traditional learning methods are less effective in encouraging students to think critically and understand the material deeply. Therefore, this study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) learning model in improving critical thinking skills and learning outcomes of Social Studies (IPS) grade VI students. The method used in this research is Classroom Action Research (PTK) with quantitative and qualitative approaches carried out in two cycles. This research uses the Stringer Model which includes Look , Think , and Act. Each cycle consists of planning, action, observation, and reflection. Data were collected through student and teacher activity observations, as well as learning outcomes tests conducted before and after the application of PBL. The results showed that the application of PBL significantly improved students' critical thinking skills and learning outcomes. In Cycle I, there was an increase in student participation from 92% to 100%, as well as a significant increase in the post-test score of 82.34 compared to the pre-test of 69.30. In Cycle II, teacher effectiveness in implementing PBL reached 100% at the fourth meeting, with consistently high student participation, and an increase in pre-test scores in cycle II of 71.43 and post-test of 87.17. Although there were still some students who needed additional support, overall PBL proved effective in improving the quality of learning. This study concludes that PBL is an effective method to be applied in grade VI of SD Negeri Sidorejo Lor )1 Salatiga, both in improving critical thinking skills and student learning outcomes.
