Abstract

The aim of this research was to determine the effect of ethno-RME learning on the mathematical critical thinking abilities of class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Bangkinang Kota. This research was motivated by a lack of critical mathematical thinking skills in solving mathematical problems. One solution to overcome this problem is to use the Ethno-RME learning approach. This research is a quasi-experiment using a non-randomized control group pretest-posttest design. The population in this study was all 50 class VIII students at SMP Negeri 1 Bangkinang Kota. The samples in this research consisted of 2 classes, namely class VIII A as the experimental class and class VIII D as the control class. The sampling technique used was purposive sampling. The data collection techniques used were observation methods, mathematical critical thinking ability tests and documentation. The results of the research showed that the average pretest score for students' mathematical critical thinking ability in the experimental class was 52.52 and the average posttest score for students' mathematical critical thinking ability in experimental class is 83.40. The results of hypothesis testing for students' mathematical critical thinking abilities in the experimental class obtained a sig (2-tailed) < 0.05, namely 0.000, so that H_o was rejected and H_a was accepted. Based on the research that has been carried out, it can be concluded that the use of the Etno-RME learning model has an influence on the Mathematical Critical Thinking Ability of Class VIII Students at SMP Negeri 1 Bangkinang Kota.
